You can turn off the sun, but I'm still gonna shine!

Every once in a while I find myself in a bit of a "funk".  Everything can be good on the surface but somehow a bunch of little not so good things start to pile up underneath and all hit me at once.  I end up wanting to do nothing but become a hermit and stay snuggled up in my cozy home away from the big bad world outside.  This lasts all of 24 hours tops and then I go back out there with a smile on trying to fight the urge to be a hermit!  The truth is that I can't quite put my finger on why this happens but I do know that it balances me out.  Overall things are great and I'm genuinely happy but these "funks" that come through from time to time somehow make the good even better. The other positive side to these grumpy moods is that there is always something random and wonderful to pull me out of them!  Here are a few of these random wonderful things...

Sitting around with friends and family and laughing until your sides ache and your eyes water.  Sometimes it's just sitting there telling jokes and other times it's looking back on old memories and poking fun at each other - these times are my favorite and can pull me out of any bad mood I may have fallen into!

Day Trips!  Completely random, spontaneous, unplanned road trips for the day!! My sister and I took a ride up to York Beach in Maine yesterday and it served as the perfect mini get-away for both of us!  Hakuna Matata!!!!

Listening to a good song.  Whenever I am feeling a little bit off I either sit and listen to a really wonderful song or I blast it over the speakers at home and dance around like a crazy person - "Dog Days Are Over" by Florence + The Machine is by far one of the best songs to dance around to.  I probably look like a fool dancing around my house but it pulls me out of a funk and that's all that matters to me :)

Yoga!!  You can see the sunrise from the windows in my living room and one of the most peaceful and relaxing things for me is to do Yoga in my living room while the sun is coming up.  How can that not pull ya out of a bad mood?  It is wonderful!

A glass of red wine and chocolate!  A very lovely friend of mine recently gave me a perfect gift at the perfect time.  She gave me an adorable gift bag with a bottle of red wine, a chocolate bar and a beach/ocean scented candle.  This gift came at the perfect time - sometimes you just need to relax and indulge a little bit and thanks to her I have all the ingredients to do that!

Those are just a few of the many things that I have found cheer me up when I am feeling a little bit "off"...What do you do to cheer yourself up when you're in a funk?  I would love to have some more ideas to add to my list!

Lots of Love,
Meg

  1. These are all really great, self-healing ideas for getting yourself out of a bad place! Personally, I like to make stuff, specifically food but even more specifically, I like to bake when I'm in a mood. It's usually a "frustrated" mood that makes me bake or when I don't know how to properly make the right decision about something. I don't know how, but putting my focus into something calculated always helps me figure things out. And the reward is always healing!

My very favorite thing to do though is volunteer somewhere. This typically ends up with me volunteering at a farm sanctuary (if I can get to one). But I've been wanting to do some time at a women's shelter too, maybe in the kitchen or in the donations department, or teaching a craft. A lot of shelters have education programs for their attendants and they are often looking for people who can teach something, even if just for one class. As Gandhi said, "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." I really believe that and I think that one can really help themselves when they help others who are less fortunate or who are underrepresented.

When all else fails, I hug my dog and tell him I love him.
