I was
sorting through a bunch of my things recently and I came across a pile of hand written letters that
were given to me over the years. Some
were letters that were passed during my high school days (yes, I still have
them) and others were letters that were written and snail mailed. It really got me thinking about how sad it is
that the whole concept of mailing someone a letter has been replaced with other
forms of communication. Who would write a letter and mail it when you can e-mail, call, text message, Facebook, Tweet, etc!? Why take the time to sit down, write out a letter, get postage and put it in the mailbox when you can turn on your computer or phone, type up a quick message and click the send button? While I love the speed and efficiency of all the above ways of communication, I am saddened to see the concept of the handwritten letter fade away.
The pros of using the phone or Internet as a mode of communication are pretty obvious but it seems that we easily forget about the pros of the handwritten letter. Here are a few pros/reasons that I love receiving handwritten letters in the mail...
It seems like every day my mailbox is either filled with junk mail, bills, store ads, menus from local restaurants, or even worse - nothing at all! It is such a wonderful surprise to reach into your mailbox and find a
letter from a friend or family member mixed in with all the other stuff!
- In comparison, it is much easier to type out your thoughts than it is to write them BUT there is something special about getting a handwritten letter. You get to see the other person's handwriting, scribbles where mistakes were made and little doodles if the writer was feeling creative. A handwritten letter has so much more personality!
- If someone is going to sit down and write you a letter, they are going to put a lot of thought into it! We are usually so caught up in the hustle & bustle that our e-mails etc. are short, sweet and to the point. Yes, some e-mails are well thought out and meaningful but a letter that is handwritten and mailed is 9 times out of 10 a wonderful & thoughtful message!
Finding those letters also got me thinking about the wonderful people around me that deserve to hear how wonderful they are. We tend to get caught up in school, work,
family or whatever else fills our days and we forget to show appreciation to the people that are there for us. The ones that are there to pick us up when we
fall, cheer us up when times are tough & toast with a glass of bubbly to
celebrate major events and achievements.
These people that make up our lives deserve to hear how wonderful they
are and I am a believer that sending them a handwritten letter is a fantastic way to do so! With that being said, I feel like
I’m going to be writing a few letters over the next couple of weeks!
