Frugal Fridays - Homemade Hummus!

Happy Friday Ladies and Gents!  For this week's Frugal Friday post, I made homemade hummus.  There is almost always hummus in my refrigerator.  It tastes absolutely delicious and I'm a vegetarian so hummus is a really great source of protein for me.  There are many different brands and flavors of hummus but on average, a small container costs about $4.  That's a really great price for a really great product BUT why not make your own hummus and get more bang for your buck??  The ingredients up front will cost you more than just purchasing a container of hummus but you can make multiple batches with the following items!!

What you will need:

  • A food processor (As you can see mine is pretty retro but this old lady works really well!!)
  • 1 can of chick peas (this lovely can of Goya chick peas cost me a whopping $0.67)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame tahini (this entire container cost me $7 but I can make at least 15 batches of hummus with it easily)
  • 2 Cloves of Garlic (you can do more or less depending on your love for garlic)
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • 4 Dashes of Tabasco Sauce (for an added zing!)

It is super easy to make!!
Just put all of the above ingredients into the food processor and blend until the hummus has reached a creamy consistency

I like to add a few dashes of this yummy seasoning into the finished product.  It's McCormick Perfect Pinch Garlic & Herb and WOW is it deeeeee-licious?!  This is my favorite thing to add into the hummus but you have the freedom to add whatever you like!  I have tried it with lemon juice which adds some great flavor but you can also add Sun dried tomatoes, Artichokes, Spinach, Red peppers, etc, etc, etc.

Spread some of your homemade hummus onto a nice warm slice of pita bread and enjoy!!

In the end, it is more work and a bit more costly up front to make your own hummus.  The reward; however, is a delicious, customizable hummus AND you end up saving money in the long run since all you really need to purchase each time are more chick peas!  All in all this was another Frugal Friday Success :)

Have a good weekend everyone!  I hope it is filled with happiness and sunshine!

Lots of Love,
Meg
